Engineering information

Butterfly valve selection guide

A butterfly valve controls the flow path with a rotating disc, using approximately a quarter turn for opening and closing. The ZGV catalogue shows concentric and eccentric constructions with different seat arrangements. Match the disc, seat, connection and actuator to the specified isolation or flow-control duty.

How a butterfly valve works

Turning the stem changes the disc position in the flow path. The catalogue describes isolation and flow regulation, with flow characteristics and operating torque shown for specific constructions. Use the relevant product curve and differential pressure when specifying control duty or an actuator.

Concentric and eccentric sealing arrangements

The catalogue separates concentric, double-eccentric and triple-eccentric designs, and illustrates rubber, PTFE and metal sealing arrangements. Select the seat and disc construction together. The permitted temperature and pressure depend on the actual product and seat material.

Wafer, flanged and actuated products

Product pages identify the end connection, face-to-face dimensions and actuation. For example, the Class 150 soft-seal wafer entry includes parts, dimensions and lever or worm-gear operation. Check flange compatibility, installation space and actuator requirements against the selected product drawing.

Application and certification checks

The series overview lists urban infrastructure, petrochemical, metallurgical and power pipelines. Confirm the medium, pressure-temperature conditions and sealing requirements for the selected valve. Request any required current certificates and inspection documents; series applications and catalogue standard references do not establish project approval.

How do I prepare a valve enquiry?

  1. Identify the product reference or drawing and the required isolation or control duty.
  2. Record the fluid, nominal size, operating and design pressure and temperature.
  3. Specify body and trim or seat materials, end connections, actuation and quantity.
  4. Attach the project specification and request confirmation of dimensions, suitability and required inspection documents.

Questions before requesting a quote

What should I include in a butterfly valve RFQ?

Provide the product reference, fluid, nominal size, operating and design pressure and temperature, seat and body materials, end connection, isolation or control duty, actuator requirements, quantity and required inspection documents.

Are all butterfly valves suitable for either flow direction?

Confirm the permitted flow direction and installation orientation for the exact construction. Do not apply the characteristics of one soft-seal or eccentric design to every butterfly valve in the catalogue.

How do I compare dimensions and materials?

Use the technical tables and drawings on the individual product page. Compare the same nominal size, pressure class, connection and seat configuration, then request confirmation of the final project specification.
