Engineering information

Ball valve selection guide

A ball valve opens or closes a flow path by rotating a ball through approximately 90 degrees. The ZGV catalogue includes floating-ball, trunnion-mounted, top-entry and metal-seated designs. Select the construction against the actual fluid, pressure, temperature and operating requirements, then confirm the individual valve specification.

How a ball valve works

The stem turns the ball to open or close the passage. The catalogue illustrates the body, ball, seat, stem and packing, along with design-specific sealing arrangements. Seat material, stem sealing and actuation must be selected for the intended duty.

Floating ball, trunnion-mounted and top-entry designs

In a floating-ball design, fluid pressure can move the ball against the downstream seat. The catalogue also groups trunnion-mounted and top-entry constructions separately. Compare the matching product drawings and dimensions; a family name alone does not establish size, pressure rating or interchangeability.

Applications and material selection

The catalogue lists petroleum, natural gas, refining, chemical processing, marine, power and pipeline applications. These describe the series, not approval of every valve for every fluid. Confirm fluid composition, operating and design temperatures, differential pressure, body and trim materials, and required sealing performance.

Standards and project documents

Catalogue drawings describe fire-safe, anti-static and stem blow-out prevention features for particular designs. If the project requires certification or witnessed testing, request the applicable current certificate, scope and inspection documents with the quotation. A catalogue standard reference is not a certificate.

How do I prepare a valve enquiry?

  1. Identify the product reference or drawing and the required isolation or control duty.
  2. Record the fluid, nominal size, operating and design pressure and temperature.
  3. Specify body and trim or seat materials, end connections, actuation and quantity.
  4. Attach the project specification and request confirmation of dimensions, suitability and required inspection documents.

Questions before requesting a quote

What should I include in a ball valve RFQ?

Include the product reference or drawing, fluid, nominal size, operating and design pressure and temperature, body and trim materials, end connection, actuation, quantity, and required standards or inspection documents.

Can I select a valve from its pressure class alone?

No. Confirm the pressure-temperature rating for the selected construction and materials, as well as the fluid, seat, end connection and operating requirements. Use the individual product information and project specification together.

Where can I find dimensions and parts information?

Open the relevant product below to review the available drawings and technical tables. Include that product reference in your enquiry so the sales and technical teams can confirm the required configuration.
